The right fixture can still look wrong with the wrong bulb. A few basics make bulb shopping far less confusing than the wall of options at a hardware store suggests.
Color temperature: warm white vs. cool white
Color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K). Living rooms and bedrooms generally feel most comfortable in warm white, 2700–3000K — the same tone as traditional incandescent bulbs. Kitchens and bathrooms often do better in neutral white, 3500–4000K, for task clarity. Cool white, 5000K and above, reads clinical for most home spaces and is better suited to garages or workshops.
Lumens vs. watts: how brightness actually works
Watts measure energy use, not brightness — a habit left over from incandescent bulbs where the two happened to correlate. LED bulbs use a fraction of the wattage for the same brightness, so always check lumens instead. As a rough guide, 800 lumens is roughly equivalent to an old 60-watt incandescent, and 1600 lumens to a 100-watt.
Common base types and where they're used
E26 (standard screw base) covers the vast majority of North American table lamps, floor lamps, and many ceiling fixtures. GU10 and MR16 are common in recessed and track lighting. Always check your fixture's specifications before buying, since the wrong base simply won't fit.
Vintage Edison bulbs for style
When the bulb itself is meant to be seen — in an open fixture, a pendant, or a bare bulb string — a vintage-style Edison bulb with a visible spiral filament adds warmth and character that a standard frosted bulb can't.

Dimmable vs. non-dimmable
Not every LED bulb works with a dimmer switch, and pairing a non-dimmable bulb with one can cause flickering or a shortened bulb life. Always confirm the bulb is rated dimmable before installing it on a dimmed circuit.
