Pendant lights are one of the easiest ways to add real character to a kitchen island, dining table, or entryway — but getting the size and height wrong is easy to spot and hard to unsee. Here's the quick math.
Sizing to your table or island
A good rule of thumb: add the length and width of your room in feet, and the sum in inches is roughly the ideal fixture diameter. A 10x12 ft dining room suggests a fixture around 22 inches wide. For an island, aim for pendant shades that are one-third to one-half the width of the island, with 2–3 inches of clearance between multiple pendants.
Hanging height
- Over a dining table: 28–34 inches above the tabletop
- Over a kitchen island: 30–36 inches above the counter
- Entryway or hallway: at least 7 feet from the floor to the bottom of the fixture for clearance

Single statement vs. multiple pendants
A single oversized pendant works best over round or square tables and small islands. Two or three matching pendants in a row suit longer islands and rectangular tables — space them evenly and keep them centered over the surface, not the room.
Don't forget dimming
Pendants are often the brightest, most direct light source in a kitchen or dining space. Pairing them with a dimmer switch lets the same fixture handle both meal-prep brightness and a softer dinner setting.
